So as part of celebrating his 30th wedding anniversary, President John Dramani Mahama shared a funny but meaningful story about his marriage to First Lady Lordina Mahama, explaining how one argument taught him a lesson he has never forgotten.
Speaking at the Ringway Gospel Centre Assemblies of God Men’s Ministry Day on Saturday, August 2, 2026, Mahama recalled that after church on their 30th anniversary, he and Lordina were chatting with their pastor when the conversation turned to their marriage.
According to him, Lordina smiled and said, “I’ve done well in this marriage. But for me, this marriage would have collapsed long ago. John, I have been patient with you. Without me, which woman would marry you?”
Mahama said he quickly responded, “What? It is rather me. I am the patient one who has held this marriage.”
He said the two kept arguing until someone called him aside and advised him to stop.
“Now what kind of useless argument are you having? This argument you can never win, so stop,” the person told him.
Mahama said he took the advice.
He then recalled that around their 32nd anniversary, they were once again in the pastor’s office when Lordina said, “Pastor, you see, I have done well, taken good care of this man, given him children too.”
This time, Mahama said he had a different response.
“It’s true, you made this marriage work. Thank you, Lordina, and God bless you,” he told her, adding that his wife looked at him in surprise.
The President said that experience changed how he handles certain situations at home.
“Sometimes, even when I know I didn’t do anything wrong, I’ll just say, ‘I’m sorry, Lordina.’ And you get your peace, and the marriage continues. We should learn to respect and show dignity,” he said.
