Ahead of South Africa’s second Group A match against Czechia at the FIFA World Cup, captain Ronwen Williams has appealed for unity among football fans across Africa, urging supporters not to let political differences overshadow the game.
The goalkeeper’s comments come after South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match, a result that sparked widespread reactions on social media. Bafana Bafana also ended the match with nine players following two red cards.

Much of the criticism directed at South Africa was linked to lingering anger over previous xenophobic attacks that targeted migrants from several African countries, including Ghana and Nigeria. Those incidents drew condemnation across the continent and left lasting tensions among some football supporters.

Williams said football should serve as a platform to bring people together rather than deepen divisions. He encouraged fans to celebrate the sport, show respect to one another and support fellow Africans regardless of national borders.
