NDC to name national headquarters after Rawlings, unveil bust on 79th birthday

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), in collaboration with the J.J. Rawlings Foundation, has announced the naming of the party’s national headquarters after Flt Lt Rawlings and the unveiling of a bust in his honour.

This forms part of a series of commemorative events scheduled on Monday, June 22, 2026, to mark what would have been the 79th birthday of the party’s founder, former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings.

The events, themed “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” are aimed at celebrating the life and contributions of the late former President to Ghana’s democratic development.

According to a statement signed by the NDC’s Deputy National Communication Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, “The first event of the day will be the naming of the party headquarters after Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings and the unveiling of his bust at 9 am.”

The ceremony is expected to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama, who will address participants alongside other leading members of the party.

“The event will be addressed by the leader of the party, President John Dramani Mahama, and other leading members of the party,” the statement added.

The second event will be a lecture and exhibition at the auditorium of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra. The programme is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Renowned Ghanaian lawyer and academic Tsatsu Tsikata will deliver the keynote address.

“The keynote speaker will be Ghanaian academic and lawyer, Tsatsu Tsikata,” the statement said.

Other speakers include Dr Akwasi Opong Fosu, former Minister for Local Government and current Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, and former Minister for Information and National Security, Kofi Totobi Quakyi.

The NDC and the J.J. Rawlings Foundation have invited members of the public, party supporters, cadres and well-wishers to participate in the events to celebrate the late statesman’s birthday and honour his legacy.

“Members of the public, party members, supporters and cadres are all invited to participate in the two events to celebrate Flt Lt Rawlings’ birthday and honour his life and legacy,” the statement said.

The commemoration will be held under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy.”
