The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with an alleged human trafficking and forced prostitution operation at Gbane, a mining community in the Talensi District.
The suspects, identified as Peace Agbede, Favour Sunday Udo and Faith Levy, are accused of trafficking young girls and coercing them into prostitution at the mining site.
According to preliminary police investigations, the prime suspect, Peace Agbede, allegedly met one of the victims in Nigeria and promised to help her pursue a career in Ghana’s movie industry, citing her beauty as an advantage.
Police say the victim accepted the offer and travelled to Ghana with the suspect in the hope of becoming an actress.
However, upon arriving in the country, the suspect allegedly failed to fulfil the promise and instead took the victim to the Gbane-Tongo mining area, where she was reportedly forced into prostitution.
Investigators further revealed that the victim was allegedly compelled to pay GH¢400 each day to her alleged madam, Peace Agbede, from the proceeds of the prostitution.
The arrests were made as part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable persons from exploitation.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while authorities work to identify any additional victims or accomplices connected to the alleged trafficking network.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of human trafficking, assuring citizens of its commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice and safeguarding victims of exploitation.
