Apple’s long-rumoured foldable smartphone, the iPhone Ultra, is expected to be unveiled in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, but early availability may be limited due to production challenges, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Kuo reports that while Apple is preparing a formal launch event for the device, pre-orders may not begin immediately after the unveiling. Instead, customers could face a delayed ordering window compared to the standard iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models.
The analyst further suggests that shipments of the foldable device are likely to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with Apple initially restricting supply as it navigates manufacturing complexities.
Despite the expected premium price range of US$2,300 to US$2,500, Kuo believes demand will be strong enough for the device to sell out shortly after release. He also warns that limited availability could drive secondary market activity, with resale prices potentially rising 50 to 100 percent above retail value.
Kuo estimates Apple may ship between 7 million and 8 million units of the iPhone Ultra by the end of 2026, although another report suggests Apple has raised its internal production target to around 10 million units.
The iPhone Ultra is expected to feature a 7.76-inch main display alongside a 5.49-inch cover screen, powered by Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro chipset. It is also rumoured to include 12GB of RAM and a 5,500mAh battery, positioning it as Apple’s most advanced smartphone to date.
If confirmed, the iPhone Ultra would mark Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market, a segment currently dominated by competitors in South Korea and China.
