Ghana deputy captain Thomas Partey has officially joined Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab, bringing an end to his time in Spain and opening a new chapter in his distinguished club career.
The experienced midfielder arrived in Riyadh early Monday morning as he completed the final formalities of his move to the Saudi Arabian outfit. Partey joins Al Shabab as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Spanish club Villarreal, where he spent the 2025/26 season.
The transfer represents another major move for the 33-year-old midfielder, who has built an impressive career across some of Europe’s biggest leagues. Partey previously made his name at Atletico Madrid before moving to Arsenal, where he established himself as an important member of the squad during his time in the Premier League.

During his spell with the North London club, Partey made 130 appearances and scored nine goals across competitions. His strength, tactical awareness, passing ability and experience made him a key figure in Arsenal’s midfield.
After leaving Arsenal in 2025, Partey moved to Villarreal on a free transfer and featured 25 times in all competitions during his only season with the Spanish side.
His move to Al Shabab now provides the Ghana international with another competitive environment and an opportunity to continue playing regularly at a high level. The Saudi Pro League has attracted several established international players in recent years, and Partey’s experience is expected to add further quality to the Al Shabab midfield.
At international level, Partey remains an influential member of the Black Stars. He recently represented Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, featuring in three matches as Ghana advanced to the Round of 32.
His continued club football will be particularly important for Ghana as the Black Stars prepare for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which is scheduled to begin in September.

Ghana will be determined to secure qualification for the tournament after missing the previous edition, and Partey’s leadership and experience could prove crucial in that pursuit.
With another chapter of his club career now beginning in Saudi Arabia, the midfielder will hope to maintain his fitness, form and influence while continuing to serve as one of the senior figures in the Ghana national team.
