Charles McCarthy, editor of the Hawk newspaper, has issued a strong warning to the Ghanaian government following the recent xenophobic attacks on Ghanaians in South Africa.
In a fiery statement, McCarthy threatened that his outfit will openly campaign against the government if it decides to renew the mining lease of South Africa’s Gold Fields in Ghana.
“We will openly campaign against the government if they renew South Africa’s Gold Fields lease. We should let them understand that if they do not need us, we also do not need them,” he said.
His comments come in the wake of rising tensions after Ghanaian citizens were attacked in South Africa, leading to the government’s decision to evacuate hundreds of Ghanaians back home.
McCarthy’s stance has sparked debate, with some agreeing that Ghana should reconsider business ties with South African companies, while others argue that punishing local workers and the economy is not the solution.
