Should Ghana Close South African Businesses After Xenophobic Attacks?

Spread the love

We’ve all seen the heartbreaking videos: Ghanaian citizens fleeing South Africa after facing violent xenophobic attacks.

In response, our government stepped in and evacuated hundreds of our people back home. Now, a tough question is being asked:

Should Ghana retaliate by closing down South African-owned businesses operating here and deporting South African nationals?

Let’s look at the numbers first. There are over 60 South African-owned or South African-linked companies doing business in Ghana. To name a few:

Let’s be honest, there are over 60 South African companies operating in Ghana.

Big names like MTN, Shoprite, Stanbic Bank, MultiChoice (DSTV), Nando’s, and AngloGold Ashanti.

These businesses employ thousands of Ghanaians and pay taxes to our government.

So here’s my short answer: **Big No**

Why? Because two wrongs don’t make a right. Closing those shops won’t hurt South Africa; it will hurt Ghanaian workers who will lose their jobs. It will hurt our economy.

I understand the anger. But let’s not punish ourselves by trying to punish others.

Let our government demand justice through diplomacy. Let the African Union step in.
Fight for justice, not revenge.
