A pregnant Ghanaian woman and her four- year-old son have reportedly been held for more than a week at Washington Dulles International Airport, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
The woman, identified as Anabella Gyasi, is said to have arrived in the United States on May 19 with a valid tourist visa.
According to the ACLU, Gyasi travelled to the US to seek medical treatment for her son but has since been detained in a holding room by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The case has attracted attention amid ongoing immigration enforcement measures and crackdowns under the administration of Donald Trump.
Human rights advocates and immigration groups have expressed concern over the welfare of the mother and child, especially considering her pregnancy and the length of the reported detention.
The incident has also sparked conversations online about immigration policies, airport detentions and the treatment of foreign nationals entering the United States.
