The United States has issued a fresh warning to travellers, including Ghanaians, against carrying bushmeat such as akrantie and other wild game products into the country.

The reminder was issued by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which cautioned that bushmeat is prohibited from being brought into the United States due to public health and agricultural concerns.

In a post shared on its official social media platform, CBP urged travellers returning from international trips to carefully check the list of restricted items before boarding flights to the United States.

“When traveling into the U.S., please note that bushmeat is prohibited to bring into the country. Before you come back from your trip abroad, check CBP’s restricted items list about the items you plan to bring back,” the agency stated.

The warning was accompanied by photographs showing various seized bushmeat products, including smoked wild animals concealed in bags and packaging.

Bushmeat refers to meat obtained from wild animals such as rodents, antelopes, reptiles, and other game species commonly consumed in some parts of Africa. In Ghana, smoked akrantie remains a popular delicacy among many households.

U.S. authorities say such products are banned because they may carry animal diseases and pose potential risks to public health, livestock, and agricultural systems.

Travellers found carrying prohibited food items into the United States risk having the products confiscated and could face additional penalties depending on the circumstances.

The latest advisory serves as a reminder to Ghanaians and other international travellers to familiarise themselves with U.S. customs regulations before travelling to avoid complications upon arrival.
