Ghanaians have expressed excitement on social media following news that the country is set to launch its first-ever freight container train service in July 2026, marking a major milestone in the nation’s transport and logistics sector.
The new service will transport cargo containers from the Tema Port to inland depots via rail, reducing the heavy reliance on trucks and helping to ease congestion at one of West Africa’s busiest ports.
According to the Ghana Railway Development Authority, preparations are well underway after the arrival of two locomotives and 20 freight wagons, which were delivered ahead of schedule and are currently being readied for operations along the standard-gauge railway line.
Each freight train is expected to carry between 20 and 30 containers per trip, providing a faster, safer and more cost-effective alternative to road transport.
The initiative is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion around the Tema Port, lower transportation costs for businesses, minimise damage to major highways caused by heavy-duty trucks and improve the overall efficiency of cargo movement across the country.
Preparations are currently underway as the Ministry of Transport and other relevant authorities put the final arrangements in place to launch the country’s first dedicated freight train service.
