A Tamale High Court has sentenced a former police officer and his accomplice to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour each after they were found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with a high-profile armed robbery in Tamale.
The convicted officer, G/Cpl Suleman Ayuba Gbana, formerly attached to the Tamale District Police Station, was sentenced alongside Adam Siba following the conclusion of the trial on July 20, 2026.
The case relates to an armed robbery that occurred on April 15, 2020, at the entrance of the former Mum Hotel along the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway. During the attack, two foreign exchange dealers, Issahaku Sumaila and Baba Fuseini, were shot by the robbers, who fled with GH¢530,000 and other foreign currencies.
According to the Northern Regional Police Command, investigations linked the former police officer to the robbery syndicate after one of the arrested suspects identified him as a member of the group. A search of his residence led to the recovery of a Ghana Police Service pistol, 10 rounds of ammunition, three pairs of handcuffs, and a brown handbag.
Police investigations further revealed that the service pistol had been officially issued to G/Cpl Gbana during his previous assignment as a police bodyguard but had been unlawfully retained after he was transferred to another post.
Following his arrest on April 23, 2020, G/Cpl Gbana was interdicted from the Ghana Police Service while the criminal proceedings were ongoing.
At the end of the trial, the Tamale High Court found both G/Cpl Suleman Ayuba Gbana and Adam Siba guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery and sentenced them to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour each.
