In early summer, the ice on Sayram Lake melts away, revealing its crystal-clear, transparent blue waters. The lakeside is blanketed with lush green grass, while snow-capped mountains in the distance create a stunning contrast with the lake. Sayram Lake is the largest and highest alpine lake in Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
It also bears the romantic moniker, “the last tear of the Atlantic.” This name stems from the warm and humid air currents from the Atlantic Ocean that travel vast distances to reach the area, where they are lifted by the Tianshan Mountains to form precipitation, ultimately feeding into the lake.
Bringing together snow-capped peaks, ancient glaciers, dense forests, rolling grasslands and sapphire-blue waters, Sayram Lake has become one of northwest China’s most iconic eco-tourism destinations.
