Two people, including a two-week-old baby, are feared dead following a fire outbreak at the North Industrial Area branch of Duraplast Ghana in Accra in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, 2026.

The fire, which reportedly started following a suspected gas cylinder explosion, sent thick smoke and flames into the air, causing panic among workers, residents and others within the industrial enclave.

According to preliminary reports, the two suspected fatalities include a newborn baby. However, the identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding their reported deaths have yet to be officially confirmed.

An eyewitness identified as Mohammed alleged that the incident occurred after a woman who had been cooking for her children briefly left the scene.

He claimed that one of the children subsequently increased the gas supply, resulting in an explosion that triggered the fire.

“Some woman was cooking for her children and she went out and one of the children increased it and then the cylinder exploded,” he recounted.

The flames reportedly spread rapidly, with thick smoke engulfing parts of the surrounding area and raising concerns about the safety of people nearby.

The eyewitness account has not been independently confirmed, and the exact cause of the fire remains unknown.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, establish the cause of the blaze and confirm the reported casualties.

Further details regarding the extent of the damage and the identities of the victims are yet to emerge.
