Norway’s national football team has embraced its historic roots ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, posing as Vikings in a striking photoshoot before departing for the tournament in North America.

The unique project was captured by renowned photographer David Yarrow on a private beach near Oslo, where the squad was photographed alongside traditional longships and dressed in Viking-inspired attire.

The dramatic imagery was designed to symbolise Norway’s journey to the United States, Canada and Mexico as a modern-day voyage, drawing inspiration from the seafaring explorers who helped shape the country’s history.

Arsenal captain and Norway skipper Martin Ødegaard was absent from the main photoshoot due to his involvement in the UEFA Champions League final. However, after flying back to Oslo on Tuesday, he was later added to the final image to ensure the entire squad was represented.

According to the Norwegian Football Federation, the concept was inspired by the Viking symbolism already embraced by many supporters during matches. The federation saw the photoshoot as an opportunity to strengthen the team’s identity and create a memorable moment before the start of the World Cup.
