Before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Nigerian musician Davido jokingly declared himself to be Ghanaian, which caused a stir on social media.
On Tuesday, June 2, the award-winning musician made the statement after reposting a video clip of President John Dramani Mahama talking about Ghana’s plans for fan support at the forthcoming competition.
President Mahama clarified in the video that because of the great expense involved, the government will not finance or transport Ghanaian supporters to the World Cup.
He pointed out that since the competition is being held in three different nations, the state will needlessly bear the cost of such travel.
Rather, the president said that Ghana would rely on its expatriate population to provide the Black Stars a lot of support during the competition.
Reacting to the statement, Davido shared the video on his Instagram Story and added a brief but attention-grabbing caption: “I am Ghanaian for the World Cup.”
Football fans were immediately enthralled by the post, and many saw it as the Nigerian celebrity’s way of supporting Ghana’s national team in advance of the greatest football tournament.
Davido’s humorous statement coincides with the growing anticipation surrounding the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations.
