JacintaJacinta Mangobese Zuma, founder of the March for March Movement in South Africa, has weighed in on the ongoing criticism of her country over xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals.
In a pointed statement, she questioned why South Africa is being singled out when far worse atrocities have occurred elsewhere on the continent, with complete silence from African leaders.
“I wonder how people say South Africa is xenophobic, meanwhile we have countries like Sudan where they slaughter human beings live on television, and no president in Africa condemned it,” she said.
She argued that while the whole continent is now talking about South Africa’s actions, no similar outcry was raised over the violence in Sudan.
“You’ve never seen all these African countries gather and say, ‘The president of Ghana, the president of Kenya, let’s come together, how are we going to fix the issue in Sudan?’ You’ve never heard that. They don’t do that when it comes to that,” she added.
“Some African countries slaughter people on camera, yet you never see African leaders urgently meeting to find solutions. But when South Africans raise concerns about protecting their own country, it is quickly labelled as xenophobia,” says Jacinta Ngobese- Zuma.#TheBOYSTV… pic.twitter.com/gtEefoV5Fl
