UK UNIVERSITIES FACE BAN ON INTERNATIONAL STUDENT RECRUITMENTS OVER VISA ABUSE

Universities in the United Kingdom could face strict penalties, including being barred from recruiting international students, under new government measures aimed at tackling abuse of the student visa system.

Under the proposed sponsorship rules, higher education institutions will be required to maintain course completion rates of at least 90 per cent. Universities that fail to meet the benchmark could face a range of sanctions based on the severity of their non-compliance.

The government argues that high dropout rates may be a warning sign that some students are entering the illegal labour market rather than pursuing their studies. Similarly, high visa refusal rates or low enrolment figures could indicate that institutions are not carrying out sufficient checks on prospective applicants before sponsoring them.

As part of the reforms, a new “traffic light” rating system will be introduced from the summer of 2027. The system will publicly identify which institutions are recruiting international students responsibly and which are falling short of expected standards.
